Robots in Space

We often use robots in environments that are harsh or unfriendly to humans. In space, there is a starkly drawn line between friendly and unfriendly environments – it’s called inside and outside. Inside the space habitats we will live in, it will be warm and well lit and safe. Outside it will be cold and dark and deadly.

While it may be practical to perform some actions in extra-vehicular space suits, in most cases it will be easier and better to simply use robotic machines which can be guided or even directly manipulated by humans who stay inside. Here is a list of tasks likely to be performed by robotic machines:

  • construction
  • transportation
  • maintenance and repairs
  • mining
  • refining
  • manufacturing
  • material processing
  • waste management
