FutureGrid

FutureGrid is a high speed network connected to clusters of high performance computers and linked to Teragrid. TeraGrid is the worlds largest distributed cyber-infrastructure that integrates high performance computers, data resources and experimental facilities. While TeraGrid is designed to provide computing resources, FutureGrid is oriented toward developing tools and technologies.

Water on the Moon and Mars

It has long been known that water exists in comets, asteroids, on Mars and on the Moon, but the key question has always been, “how much is there?” Shadows in craters at the Moon’s poles have been suspected to hold some ice, but there was little hope of finding enough moisture across the rest [...]

SMB2 Threat

The SMBv2 vulnerability that has been lurking for several weeks now has exploit code available from both Canvas and Metasploit:
Remote exploit released for Windows Vista SMB2 worm hole - [zdnet.com]
[Canvas]
Security researchers at penetration testing firm Immunity have created a reliable remote exploit capable of spawning a worm through an unpatched security hole in Microsoft’s dominant [...]

1M VMs

Sandia computer scientists successfully boot one million Linux kernels as virtual machines - [sandia.gov]
Computer scientists at Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, Calif., have for the first time successfully demonstrated the ability to run more than a million Linux kernels as virtual machines.
The achievement will allow cyber security researchers to more effectively observe behavior found [...]

AR Displays

Augmented reality displays can be delivered in as many different ways as data can be displayed. Displays that are projected onto a surface, or “heads-up” style displays on see through screens or glasses or contact lenses, and even display information that is projected onto the retina of the eyeball are all possible.
Future [...]

Snort

Snort is a free, open source, packet sniffing, protocol analyzing, intrusion detection engine that can be used for both network IDS (intrusion detection system) and IPS (intrusion prevention system) and can be linked to a variety of analysis front end interfaces. It runs on both linux and windows. Snort rules establish the parameters for packet [...]

SANS Cyber Risk List

For many years, the top worry of defensive security specialists has been focused on closing/patching holes/vulnerabilities in the operating systems at the perimeter of the information system. This excellent report published by SANS suggests that the attackers are re-focusing their efforts on client side software and web applications that remain more vulnerable. Client applications that [...]

Ambient Intelligence

Ambient Intelligence describes a situation where many interconnected electronic devices that surround an individual can respond to their needs with personalized information and may even be able to make deductions about the current state of the person and adapt in real time. It can also imply some collective analysis and response by the devices creating [...]

1712 - atmospheric engine

In 1712, Thomas Newcomen improved on Savery’s miner’s friend by adding a piston driven by a rod, which was probably designed early by Dennis Papin. Newcomen applied Papin’s design into a working industrial engine which he called the “atmospheric engine”.

1698 - miner’s friend

In 1698 Thomas Savery patented a steam powered pump which he called “the miner’s friend” because it was intended to help pump water out of mines. He may have copied the design from a previously published book by Edward Somerset. The device had no piston and almost no moving parts, working through the [...]
